Discussion Question(s):

Answer one or any amount of questions:

  • How can we stop something like this from ever happening again?
  • Should the NCAA be responsible for not finding this out sooner?
  • Should Adidas be fined for their employee cheating the system?
  • Since some athletes are being paid under the table anyways, should all college athletes be allowed to be paid legitimately?

  1. I think that it is incredibly difficult to stop something like this to happen in the world that we live in. The quality of athletes that schools are able to recruit seems to only keep on increasing, and it will be harder than ever to attract top athletes. I believe that the NCAA mandates a large, and pretty costly compliance team at every school to ensure that things like this don’t happen, but it seems that more should be invested given just how much money college sports can make a team. I think expanding compliance offices and making sure that the penalties levied on a school are larger than what the benefit was to the individuals is important in ensuring that something like this doesn’t happen again. I think that Adidas should definitely be fined because there is no way that only one person could have known about what was happening and where the money was going. I think that saying that some athletes getting paid leading to all athletes getting paid means that it’s for the wrong reason. I think that the reasons that people normally support paying athletes is because of the revenue that college sports brings in. Just because something is happening illegally doesn’t mean that we should legalize it.

I don't think there is any way to stop anything like this from happening. Bribes like this have been happening for a long time in college sports especially basketball. This isn't the first time Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino has had some scandal or bribery problem happen under his watch. Under his coaching there was also a prostitution scandal. Unfortunately bribes are starting to become a normal reality the NCAA in basketball. I think sooner or later the NCAA should consider paying players because some players come to these big name schools either homeless or poor. When they do come to schools in that situation they're playing football, or basketball or some other sport to provide for their family. Some players need the money and coaches are legally allowed to help them. Coaches can't buy them food. These players get scholarships and get to go to college for free but then aren't able to pay for food without a meal card.

  3. I think the NCAA should not be responsible, even if they found out much later than it happened. The NCAA puts in rules and regulations to essentially stop players from making any monetary gains. With that being said, I think it would be near impossible to stop something like this from happening again. Basically what you would be trying to do is stop people from buying illegal drugs/guns on some sort of black market, which has been a problem for a incredibly long time and hasn’t been stopped yet.

  4. I think the NCAA should be more responsible for not finding this out sooner. In order to stop this from occurring, they should impose stricter rules or paying a lot more attention to prospective d1 athlete. Also, NCAA should be watching big name brands to make sure they don't try and bribe players. I think Adidas should be penalized for their actions because by involving their big brand/ company for college athletes would change everything and basically take away the non biased part of debating what schools athletes should go to.

  5. I don't think the NCAA is completely at fault for players getting paid or getting special treatment, but I think the NCAA needs to be more aware and put more effort into making sure these issues don't occur in the future. They should pay more attention when noticing something peculiar from a college kid who may have a gold chain around his neck or a fur coat. If the NCAA is more anal about this problem, I'm sure the problem will slowly go away and in the future this won't be a problem anymore.
NCAA athletes should not be paid, they sign up for their crazy school schedules mixed with their insane practice and game schedules. The players should be responsible for what they sign up to be doing, and they should not be getting paid to attend a school when a lot of them technically get paid with scholarships.

  6. I think something like this is extremely difficult to prevent. This is because I am sure that it is going on in many schools and not just Louisville. I think it is extremely difficult to prevent because all of what is going on is under the table. This means that there are thousands of athletes that this is mostly likely happening to. It can't be prevented because there is realistically no possible way to monitor what is going on between programs and athletes. Also, part of the problem is with the vast amounts of perks that can be given to athletes nowadays mean that it can be super hard to figure out money being placed in different outputs. The amount of money that are in Division I sports makes it easier for them to spread it to the athletes.

  7. I think that college athletes should be payed or compensated for their work. They make the school and the NCAA lots of money, but get nothing in return. Many players spend their entire college career getting better at their sport and never make it pro, but they wasted their entire college education participating in ghost classes and playing sports. The NCAA needs to reward the players for the money that they are bringing into the industry, and for their willingness to give up their education (which is an important backup for a student athlete to have) to do so. This is a way to prevent deals like this from occurring. Players will be getting compensated for their skills and are making money for the time that they are putting in, and they will not feel the need to have these deals before they are allowed.

  8. I think that the NCAA should regulate the under the table paying for college athletes. I believe that since they are students, they should not have the right to be paid because it is a college sport. I think this is a violation of the NCAA because it give players who are being payed under the table an unfair advantage. This can be stopped if the NCAA cracked down on those who were secretly being paid under the table, and created legislation against it happening again.

  9. In my opinion I feel as if this should be allowed in our athletic society. This is because the Universities generate a ton of revenue off of this players they should be allowed to think about the future. This would help them be better set up in the long run. To me, what is the difference between having initially conversations with an agent and addressing an athletes future, to a student who is working a job or interning? In addition, to many of these players basketball is the only option later in life so it is perfectly reasonable for them to build up their name when they can. For the NCAA to stop this they can either not addresses it at all or set extensive regulations. This might include increased punishments for committing these offenses.

  10. I think that Adidas needs to be fined. If Adidas knows that this is against the NCAA rules and regulations and they continue to grant money to these schools, players and coaches they need to be responsible for the charges or partial charges. Yes the schools and the players play a role in this as well, but Adidas is the main company providing the funding for this to happen and for these players and schools to be persuaded in a certain way. Either there needs to be a change on whether or not college athletes are paid legitimately or the already in place rules need to be strictly enforced and big companies like Adidas need to be fined or punished for their part take in these problems.

  11. I think the NCAA should be responsible for not finding this out sooner, they should have been more aware of what is going on. They should be paying more attention and they should be putting more effort in to make sure this doesn't happen. The NCAA should be focusing on big companies like Adidas so that athletes won't be paid under the table. I also believe Adidas should be fined for funding these athletes because they knew what they were doing was against the rules.

  12. I think that college athletes should be paid while they are in college. This is because the player generates so much revenue for the college, and the player should get a cut of the money they make. At times these players need to bring home money to support their families, and without payment they resort to illegal actions. With payment they can support their families, and potentially finish out their college education. Something like this is very hard to prevent in the future, because it is very hard to catch teams in the act of violating the rules. Like it was said in the first article the college recruiting process has become a "black market" this can only be combated by making this from of recruiting allowed. This will allow there to be an even recruiting platform. I do not think the NCAA could have found out any sooner because they have oversight of all the teams in all sports, so it is difficult to regulate that many people.

  13. I think NCAA athletes should be paid legally. You look at the Ohio State Football program that was just valued at 1.5 billion dollars, yet the athletes that give the school all this revenue get none of it. Though I do think it would bring up complications with recruiting and it would become a contest of who is willing to pay their athletes more, athletes should be able to get some money out of making schools this much money. Plus, athletes spend so much time on their sport rather than school that the extra money would help them post college.

  14. I think the NCAA is definitely responsible for this because paying players under the table is unacceptable. NCAA's focus should be on big name companies as well as their sports teams so that they can monitor what is happening and if it is legal or not. If the NCAA doesn't do this then im positive this will happen again. Adidas should be fined because their employee decided to break the rules and regulations by paying student athletes under the table and bribing them to go to certain colleges and as a result the company should be fined accordingly.

  15. Since some athletes are being paid under the table anyways, should all college athletes be allowed to be paid legitimately?

I think this is a very interesting question. Yes, some college athletes are getting paid under the table and while that does violate the NCAA rule that athletes are not allowed to be given a salary. However, I do think that they should be given a salary because they generate plenty of money for the school and although some say they will get paid once they turn pro, that is only true for a small fraction of student-athletes. Seeing as athletes generate money for the schools it would only be fair if they got some part of it. Obviously, it makes sense that the star running back for Alabama wouldn't get as much as the kicker. The individual salaries would have to be looked more into detail but I feel as if they should get at least something.

  16. Since some athletes are being paid under the table anyways, should all college athletes be allowed to be paid legitimately?

In my opinion I do think college athletes deserve the right to be legitimately paid. Not only are these athletes contributing to the success and $$$$$$ the NCAA is making off of March Madness, tickets, etc., but these athletes work very hard to maintain a student-athlete title. If they are raking in revenue and physically + mentally distressing themselves, there should be no reason why they aren't getting paid. The NCAA's claim of them "not being adults" is somewhat valid, but what does that entail for the players over 21? At the least, I feel like the NCAA should pay their "adult" players some amount. It can really ease the pressure that college and textbooks put on students.

  17. The NCAA should pay the students or they should pay the school to pay the students because the NCAA is making serious bank off of the players. Things like March Madness and jerseys provide the NCAA with a massive annual income all at the expense of the college players. Of course these students are usually given scholarships, however, a scholarship may not cover the athletes tuition. I feel the NCAA should at least pay the champions of March Madness because the money they rake in is more than enough to at least provide a minimum wage type payment system for the players.

  18. I think that the NCAA should carry the responsibility for not discovering this earlier. TO stop this from happening again, there must be more strict rules that D1 players have to comply with in order to play. However, I do think that NCAA players should have the opportunity to make money while playing the sport, but it should not be an under the table situation.

  19. Since athletes being paid has been a serious issue for many years and was finally discovered by the NCAA this will make paying athletes slow down temporarily. But we know that this is an issue and is happening at more than just the schools that have been caught, they are just unlucky. Due to this being done at many schools I don’t think that it will be likely for it to stop. There is no way for people to find out about it unless they mess up like the schools have recently. I think the only way for this to stop completely is to give the schools that have been caught a very serious penalty to try and scare other schools from continuing to pay athletes to play at their school. I think an appropriate penalty would be the “death penalty”. This would ban schools for playing for a whole year. This is by far the worst penalty a team could get. I also think that if other schools found out that this was the penalty, they would probably stop paying athletes because they would not want to miss a year of playing, also it would give the school a terrible reputation.

  20. A way to prevent top of the notch basketball organizations like Louisville from paying there athletes is by having an individual NCAA advisor for every college campus throughout the country who watches over the colleges athletic program to make sure they are cooperating within NCAA boundaries. If any college team chooses to violate these rules, it is the advisors job to step in and tell the board what is happening. By doing this the NCAA has a better chance of preventing further incidents like what happened with the Louisville basketball organization.
